sabbath july 3 – final day!

japanese and korean flags at parade of nationsbaptist alliance church leader (???)lots and lots of adventistslots of people at georgia dome for 59th session of general conference of sdasjapanese group of sdas at georgia dome

What a great day to end the 2010 General Conference Session in Atlanta Georgia! We figured there would be more people attending today than the previous Sabbath, so we left the house early and arrived around 8:45am and got our usual parking space on level 2 in the red deck ($10/day). We always sat in section L23, which we did again, up only 10 rows from the floor where all the delegates were seated. It is kind of funny to look at the small people on the stage far away, and then notice that most of the people around you are looking the opposite direction – towards the large screen at the other end of the dome – ha!

A few rows behind us, there was a group of around 30 Japanese. I asked one of them something in Japanese, and they responded, and then i told them i was from the Osaka Center church, and they clapped for me – haha. After the sermon, one of them came by and handed all of us in our group nicely printed envelopes with 2 bookmarks enclosed.

The Sabbath school lesson was done by a lady and John Fowler and Clifford Goldstein. They had a lively discussion on the book of Romans, keeping interest high. Brother Fowler did display a tendency to talk big emptiness, which is a national liability of his home country. Then Ted Wilson gave the main sermon, an entire hour regarding what the Seventh-day Adventist church is and should do. Before that tho, there was a letter read from the president of America – Barack Obama, stating his good wishes on us.

It was an amazing sermon, titled “Go Forward”, one which i’ve been desiring to listen to from a top church official for over 30 years.
The audio is here: Ted Wilson’s Sabbath July 3 sermon, and the written pdf text is here: sermon text to read

He said “we are a peculiar people”. The word “peculiar” was mentioned twice in the sermon, putting a thrill thru my bones. For much too long we’ve wanted as a people to be just like the world as much as possible, and avoiding any hint of “peculiarity”. So right near the start of the sermon, there is this direct “back to the basics” drive which made my heart sing. He strongly uplifted creation and the SOP, quoted from Steps to Christ, presented Justification and Sanctification in clear terms, said we must be humble, and need revival and latter rain. He said we must have a literal interpretation of the Bible, should be Christ-centered, and that we must support Spirit of Prophecy until the “end of time”.

He came out against a liberal interpretation of the Bible, going to mega-churches, the emerging church, and wrong worship styles. He even clearly stated at the beginning of his sermon that he wished us not to clap, but could say “amen” at appropriate times. He even clearly said that the higher-critical method of Bible interpretation is not good.

The very only one thing that made me pause at all about his sermon, is that in talking about prophecy charts, he said “historical Adventism will not be moved”. This sounds to me like he is set in interpreting the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation in the old, dried, “all in the past” style we have set in concrete, but maybe that is not his intent, and then again, maybe he has not studied it out in detail to know that many of the things we teach are in the past (like the 7 Trumpets) are actually in the future.

My sister and neice came, and we enjoyed all eating out in the park afterwards. Some in our group complained of the heat, but it felt good to me 🙂 I lost connection with the person with the car keys, and as i wanted to get my 1858 Great Controversy books out of the car, i quickly parted company with my relatives which probably made them think i was running away from them….. I need to think more of others than my own desires sometimes. Anyway, the car was locked, so i couldn’t get my stuff until around 4pm. Then i took some of the books to the exhibition hall, where i talked with Brother Henderson of The Great Controversy Project. He had talked in the dome in the morning describing his project until someone came up and asked him to cut it off – ha! Lots of passion, but not sure of results. Anyway, he looked at my book and said he was not interested in putting out a stripped-down version of the book. I assured him it is the ENTIRE original book, and he asked if it was printed in 1844, then mentioned something about the book he is promoting as coming out in 1910. No doubt he was a bit stressed out, but i got the feeling that he is very passionate about spreading the Great Controversy book, but not too well versed in the history of the making of the Great Controversy book. He said some Divison people in various parts of the world have asked him for smaller versions to print, so i handed him one of these 1858gc books, and asked him to at least consider it if there is a need for a smaller book with the whole great controversy story in it. He accepted it, and we prayed together. At his booth i met John Brereton, who used to be the publishing director for the SE Asia Union Mission. We have run into each other at more places (Singapore, Thailand, Sabah Malaysia, etc) than i have run into anyone else in the world i think 🙂 He is now the publishing director or something in the South-Pacific Asian Division, and said sales of books in Papua New-Guinea were up 60% last year, and up 19% in Australia too – wow! Praise God. We had a nice prayer together too.

I went to the prayer room, then went to see the new painting by Nathan Greene that was unveiled at the morning church service. It is nicely done, i understand taking 8 months to plan and paint. It is of the 2nd Coming, and while being politically correct, something about it leaves me flat. I don’t know why…..

The evening meeting saw us surrounded by rows and rows of over 80% black members. That was one thing nice to see about the Session overall – the great expansion of the message to Central and South America and Africa and India. But the “Parade of Nations” itself was a bit strange. There was a short video from each Divison highlighting the scenery from their area, mostly with a heavy backbeat. It was my first time to hear the “Hallelujah Chorus” with a backbeat – ouch! Then the representatives would walk across the stage holding their flags, and then they walked around a darkened dome and then sat down in their seats on the opposite side. It was a bit disappointing, as i had imagined a huge mass of waving flags at least at the end, but such was not to be. The Vatican’s flag did NOT appear, raising several questions in my mind. But the worst thing of the whole show, was that this was on the Sabbath, yet there was no sense of worship at all, with many jumping up and shouting and whistling and clapping when their respective countries were called. This really must be changed to either a different day, or else the whole idea of parading flags should be re-examined.

The human traffic jam (69,989 official attendees at the morning meeting) going out was equalled only by the automobile jam. We got back to the house a little after 11:30pm, extremely tired, but also very happy and excited to think of what God has wrought for his people, both in the way of spreading the gospel over the whole world, and also of the election of a God-fearing leader.

May God help us repent and come back to him so he can bless the Seventh-day Adventist church, and continue leading it upwards till we reach the heavenly home.

reverend somebody of what church????egw estate booth at 2010 general conference session of seventh-day adventistsindian and uk friends

clifford goldstein does creation science in a down-to-home mannerhartland publication’s table with the publishing director and colin standish

I didn’t think today would be quite so exciting, as yesterday i had two big things AND two EGW Estate people showed very strong support for this 1858 Great Controversy book, but God, as usual, has different expectations than i do, and i found myself with probably the most amazing experience of this whole GC Session.

In the morning i had gone to the Hartland Publications’ table in the Marketplace, surprised to see them knowing how strained relations have been between them and the General Conference. It seemed to be a highlight tho of what i’ve felt during this whole Session — that is, a feeling of openness and less bitterness between those of opposing views. Maybe it is just my feeling, but i hope and pray that it is the real power of the Holy Spirit to meld hearts together 🙂 Anyway, the man there was very interested in actually BUYING some of these 1858gc books. I was taken by surprise, perhaps because he is the very first one to talk about purchasing these books since i’ve come. I asked him to read the Forward and other stuff that i wrote carefully, to make sure he agrees with it before purchasing. He then said i should call him next week, and it seemed to be in the vein of perhaps working together somehow, so i’m looking forward to doing that on Tuesday.

The amazing event was totally unexpected. I was kind of half-manning the booth at Living Springs for Bill Dull who had gone to lunch, and was talking with Pastor Poholka, when an Indian-looking man came up to the booth. He looked at the map a while, and i proffered a brochure explaining what Living Springs is doing in India. He then opened up that he was a MD in the UK, and had been convicted that he should get medical missionary training – so much so, that he has already tendered his resignation to take effect at the end of this month! Now i’m super-excited! First i take him next door to the Uchee Pines booth, where we talk with Don Miller. He had heard of Uchee Pines before, and thot that it might be the best place to get medical missionary training, and as he talked, his face brightened up more and more. Then we moved down to the Wildwood booth (all in the OCI area), and talked to the man there. That man just recommended the usual course, but his whole tenor changed when he learned that this man was already a MD – ha! He recommended that this man come for a “live-in observation” of whatever length of time would be necessary to instill the skills necessary to carry out medical missionary work in the UK. My new-found friend was now on a high it seemed, and we moved down to see Dr. Mary Ann McNeilus in the ASAP booth. Who should we meet talking there, but a man who runs a self-supporting medical missionary training school in India near Hosur, at which place his brother had been already! That man invited the UK man to come and help out. Then Mary Ann talked with and encouraged him, and told him her experience of switching over from a “regular” doctor to a medical missionary doctor. Then she prayed for us. You know, something just FEELS very different, when someone offers to pray with you. I didn’t see that happen near as much as i thot i would at the Session, so it was extra special to see it offered to this man who she had only known for about 4 minutes. I didn’t think anything more exciting could happen with this man, but when i offered him a 1858gc book, he looked incredulous and said “Are you the one who has the earlysda.com website”? I answered in the affirmative, and he told me that he had gotten serious about studying about Ellen White 3 years previous, and when searching the internet, he found my site and was richly blessed by it!!!! Wow! I’ve often wondered if all the long hours put into putting books and stuff up on that site has been worth it, as i’ve had almost no contact with people using it, but here before me was a live example of someone who was extremely appreciative of what i’d done! I gave praise to God, and we parted after a very joyous prayer. Oh yes, he said that the reason he came to the GC Session, is that he knew he needed to get this medical missionary training and work full-time for Jesus, but after walking around the place, he had almost given up, and had prayed desperately in his heart just a few minutes earlier that the Lord would lead him to someone who could help show him the way. Another “Wow!” moment 🙂 Thank you Jesus, and please bless this man, lead and guide him, and set him as a precious stone in your temple.

I praise God that altho i was nervous, i believe i was able to give a good overview of the work done to spread the 1858 Great Controversy book. The interviewer’s name was “Summers”, so we had a good laugh about that 🙂

The publishing director for Hartland Publications is interested in buying quantities of these books, and i hope to talk more with him on Friday. In the evening i was even able to personally hand a book to our new president – Brother Ted Wilson. I hope he reads it and follows it.

In the afternoon i met the directors of the self-supporting work for OCI in the Far East – which includes Japan. I’ve worked for several years with the wife when we were at Country Life Restaurant in Osaka. She wasn’t too supportive of my idea to work as a volunteer – helping out for half a day, and then doing my animation project on my own for half a day. May God’s will be shown clearly, so that i can follow.

tuesday june 29

Most of today was spent talking with the Adventist Mission people, Gospel Ministries International people, and Bill Dull again. The man at AM was very interested in my story of travelling around spreading the 1858gc book, and we even had a civil discussion on how to approach Muslims. The Quiet Hour man was quite supportive of the Qur’an which should give a pause to anyone considering supporting them. Jon Wood and David Gates kindly gave me around 45 minutes of their time (lunch break ++) discussing how to spread this 1858gc book, and also maybe how i could work with their team in the media dept., working on this Great Controversy animation. They also invited me to appear for an interview on their Mission TV Thursday afternoon at 2pm. Please pray for me to know what to do, and how to give a proper interview.

Today i met the president of the SDA church in Armenia while in the bathroom. I had stayed at his house when i was in Azerbaijan. The other “chance” encounter was with the man in charge of Jeeva Jyothi in India. Just a 1/2 year ago i spent a couple of nites at his place, wondering if the wild elephants would come and rampage and tear the place down. His wife was even with him, saying it was the first time she’d ever come to America. No doubt it looks cleaner to her in many ways, and there are no wild elephants to worry about, but maybe the lack of people induces loneliness or the absence of neighbors calling out to her might make her feel left out….

The evening Yes Creation! meeting was excellent, with a professor at Andrews University explaining in new and interesting ways how creation is at the core of Seventh-day Adventist theology. He drove home the point that creation or re-creation is in “seventh-day” and “adventist”. It was a resounding talk which made one’s heart glad to be part of this great Seventh-day Adventist movement 🙂

trains running thru georgia dome parking deckssouth american division flags on center stage in georgia domeexhibition hall around oci boothsbill dull of living springs communicating and communicatingToday was another nice day, spent mostly at the OCI area, more specifically, with Bill Dull and his Living Springs group. I talked a bit about opportunities to be of service in India with his team, and it sounds like what i’ve seen everywhere – that there are always opportunities available. What is God’s plan? I still don’t know.

Someone called Bill while i was there and told him to go to the NEST booth and see their animations of the Bible. I thot they were pretty good, and faithful, but i do understand the concern that children will think they are “just cartoons”, and put them in the same category as other cartoons. Using illustrations is fine tho according to what God said thru Ellen White, so i just cannot believe that there could be anything wrong with putting pictures together to make a “moving” picture.

There were several good talks with people regarding the 1858gc book, and i passed out maybe 20 – 25 copies again today. The “goose bump” moment which i’ve had every day here, happened today when i talked with someone from Oklahoma Academy, and he seemed to understand immediately some of the deeper reasons for the need for this book. Thank you Lord for leading me to these people, and help me not to pass by anybody just because they “look” like they wouldn’t be interested.

The man at the E.G. White center was talking to others about the Great Controversy book. There is a little exhibit in a glass case with some letters supposedly from Ellen White showing how she corrected the manuscripts, how others tracked down references for quotes, and how she was so pleased with the new 1911 edition. hmmmm. Of course to most people passing thru, this is all “yes yes”, but to someone studying what is going on, it looks like an attempt to put down fires or prevent future fires. He did say that this 1858 Great Controversy started to be known by the name “Spiritual Gifts Volume 1” in 1860, as that is when “Volume II” came out.

I skipped lunch, as i was having too much fun talking with people, but had some green pepper and bread heels outside for supper with a 7-layer Taco Bell burrito – yum yum. The Yes! Creation seminar for the evening was super basic, saying that the “Deep Time” evolutionistic theory does away with a compassionate, sin-destroying God.

With my 1858 Great Controversy books in hand, i went around the exhibition hall at the General Conference Session in Atlanta at the Georgia World Congress Center to see how to spread them. There are “Marketplace” tables along one wall which cost 30$ each/day. The main table space (booths) cost 800$ for the entire duration of the session. Anyway, i could not buy a booth last year, and the marketplace tables are all taken too, so i just went around trying to find people who looked like they might be interested, and gave them out. Most all of them took the books, and many of them seemed very glad to have them. Of course most of them have read “Spiritual Gifts Volume I”, but almost none of them had studied the differences, so i was able to inform them. A few people turned them down, like the dentist who checked my teeth and said i need to clean them and have 2 fillings re-filled, but there were 3 or 4 who seemed deeply touched with what i’m trying to do by travelling around getting this book translated, and i even teared up when a Review and Herald man said that he was glad i was doing this work, as a large organization sometimes cannot move so nimbly in small countries etc. One other man said he used to be a literature evangelist, and in talking to me, got more inspiration to think again about working full-time for God 🙂

A man told my Korean friend in the afternoon that he could display his books at his table, so the friend invited me to join him, but something happened and it didn’t work out. That’s OK.

I approached Doug Batchelor, and told him i appreciated his secretary’s humble answer to my email several years ago about his using too much joking in his sermons. He said nicely that he had dictated that email, and somehow it got sent out under his secretary’s name, and he appreciated it. What another nice shock at his humblesness 🙂 John Lomacang seemed quite happy with my giving him this book too. Oh yes, the man at the Biblical Research Institute (didn’t find out his name) talked very nicely, and told me that if he wasn’t Adventist, he would be Catholic. Goose bumps went up and down my arms, as i have told this to a few people in my life, and it seemed like no one could understand me, but here was a man who was telling me the same thing i have thot – either keep the Bible first, and or else put man (RCC) first. The other Protestant denominations don’t have a leg to stand on.

Some of the music at the Session is good, and some is quite bad, but i haven’t heard outright “rock” music yet. The food at the restaurants in the GWCC has been all vegetarianized, but i have gotten 2 meals now at the red and white tent outside for 3$. Rice and beans with collard greens and corn bread is good without any lard in it 🙂

The last thing of the day was going to the Yes! Creation seminar which was quite good, even tying in the “springs of water” in Revelation 14:6,7 to the judgement hour message – the flood.

The General Conference Session of Seventh-day Adventists is being held in Atlanta, Georgia USA. Today was my first day to go there, and while at first i felt a bit alone, after seeing the smiling face of my Korean friend Samuel, and then a missionary to India (Bob) who offered me a position working as a missionary there, and then seeing many familiar faces like John Lomacang, David Gates, Jon Wood, Calvin Thrash, Don Miller, Mary Ann McNeilus, Judy Aitken, Jacob, Daryl, Joseph, Doug Batchelor, and last of all – on the MARTA train platform when leaving – Bill Dull. What a great day. Joseph and i were scheduled to meet, and just near the end of the day, when i was signing up to get some email newsletter from the little self-supporting medical training school in Austria, the young lady at the booth said: “Someone just came by looking for you.” What good timing!

Thank you God for a wonderful day, and now please, please direct my life. Where should i go? What should i do? I will follow whatever doors you open, but let me know for sure YOU are the one opening the door.

don’t dwell forever upon the love of God

Other Manuscripts Vol.6 by Ellen White:

This goody goody religion that makes light of sin and that is forever dwelling upon the love of God to the sinner, encourages the sinner to believe that God will save him while he continues in sin and he knows it to be sin. This is the way that many are doing who profess to believe present truth. The truth is kept apart from their life, and that is the reason it has no more power to convict and convert the soul. There must be a straining of every nerve and spirit and muscle to leave the world, its customs, its practices, and its fashions. . . .

Adventists should “avoid criticism”?

The Adventist News Network has an article quoting SDA President Jan Paulsen while in Africa. There are two things he said that are very troubling. Jan Paulsen in East Africa
—————
Paulsen also spoke at Sabbath worship services in Mombasa, where he emphasized the value of unity within both the church and the broader community. Adventists in largely Muslim Mombasa should live in peace and harmony and avoid criticism, he told the congregation.

“We worship one God … so I am coming to Mombasa to worship with my family,” Paulsen said, adding that religious convictions should not stir tension in the community.
—————
With due respect to the leader of Christ’s body on earth – The Muslims and Christians DO NOT worship the same God.

Secondly, Christ himself brought on criticism and tension in his community.

God said thru Ellen White: “But when they make special efforts to accommodate themselves to the peculiar ideas and feelings of their hearers, in order to avoid criticism, they will weaken their own testimony, and fail of the object they wish to secure. They will do injustice to their mission, injustice to themselves, and also to those who criticize them.” STMW(1897).

God said thru Matthew: 5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Brother Paulsen, please repent and give the trumpet a certain sound.

natural law

“Natural Law” first came to my attention in the late 80s – early 90s thru a newsletter by a SDA layman “Bob Trefz”. Fortunately i got disassociated from him around 93 or so when he was openly advocating buying guns and running to the hills (yes, i know i should have ditched him when he talked about the black helicopters sent by the UN to spy out America – hah!). But the subject of “natural law” was dealt with in detail, and i remember wondering the first 2 or 3 times he delved into it, what has this got to do with Seventh-day Adventists preparing for the end time, but around the 4th time or so i started to catch on (i’m a slow learner), and this has stuck with me thru all these years. Just this week i told a very good friend about “natural law”, and now just today i see this article in the National Review: Natural Law in National Review

In this article, George Weigel, who i presume to be a Catholic (and whom National Review writes as “a distinguished senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center”, speaks quite persuasively in favor of natural law. It is mind-boggling to see the title of his article: “Defending Religious Freedom in Full”, while knowing full well where this mindset is leading – to the world’s last dark age where everyone who doesn’t “fit in” is exterminated.

What am i talking about?

To give a very short background: Natural Law basically arose from the Catholic church. The ablest proponent of this theory is Thomas Aquinas, who is quoted: “… all human laws were to be judged by their conformity to the natural law. An unjust law is not a law, in the full sense of the word. It retains merely the ‘appearance’ of law insofar as it is duly constituted and enforced in the same way a just law is, but is itself a ‘perversion of law.’ At this point, the natural law was not only used to pass judgment on the moral worth of various laws, but also to determine what the law said in the first place”. So according to this, all human laws are subject to some super law which is enshrined in nature itself. There are various flavors of “Natural Law”: to see a short write-up in wikipedia, try this

I think all thinking SDAs will be able to see from this where this will lead.

Let me explain it very simply: There is a theory of law saying that there are universal “natural laws” which apply to all humans in all situations. Of course God’s Word is not the source of these laws, they just somehow “exist”. Since God created the natural world, proponents of this theory try to use God as their “source”, but of course, never seem to get around to actually quoting the 10 Commandments. They use very persuasive arguements like:
1. If a tree has a dead branch, you must prune it off to make the tree healthier.
2. If you have a barrel of apples, and there is one spoiled apple in it, you must throw it out to save the other apples.
3. Nature itself teaches you what is right and wrong, so abortion and homosexuality are wrong.

See, the logic sounds impeccable, and for most everything i’ve seen, the proponents of this theory DO go by the Biblical principles. But what about in the future when a “bad apple” wishes to keep the 7th day Sabbath? When all of Satan’s angels and Satan himself appearing as Jesus and the whole world are clamoring for a Sunday Law, how will “Natural Law” help those who wish to stay true to the words of the God who wrote “Keep the 7th day Sabbath” on tables of stone with his own finger? It won’t, of course. And this is what is so dangerous about it.

One last note on this whole judicial/law thing, is that if Kagan is selected to serve as a Supreme Court Justice, there will be 6 Catholics and 3 Jews on the bench – not a Protestant in sight. Wake up SDAs, for the nite is far spent and we are not saved!

burma orphans

There are Christian groups trying to help the Karen people from Burma. Many of them have fled to the Thai border, but the Thai government is not so happy about having to care for them. This blog is quite powerful in showing what the Christian Karen people are going thru: International Christian Concern’s blog about Karen

There is also a laymen-run SDA organization doing something there too. I’ve met the lady running it, and hope she tries to work more with the SDA organization in the future. At least she seems to be wanting to follow the Bible in most instances, which is great. I met one very elderly NZ lady who has been helping the Karen for many years, and she said that they should take up guns and fight the government! I was shocked, and asked her what Jesus would do. She then asked if i would just sit by why the village was burned and raped and pillaged. I asked her what did Jesus say to do when someone strikes you on your left cheek. So much anger in her…. how can the Karen see the true love of Christ if they are told to fight? I was also told by her that the top Karen rebel leader is/was a Seventh-day Adventist – oh no!!!! No wonder our church is under suspicion in that country: eopmissions.org
