seventh-day adventists and abortion

I’ve written a few posts already regarding the sin of God’s church in condoning abortions. Now i’ve made an 11-minute video about it. I’m hoping there will be feedback on this, to make it better, as i am certainly just an amateur!

Seventh-day Adventist Church and Abortion

The Seventh-day adventist church has an official document called “Guidelines on Abortion”. This video is to protest the position my church has taken.
——————-
My Seventh-day Adventist church prides itself on “keeping the commandments of God and having the faith of Jesus” – the 2 identifying marks of God’s church at the end time.

But the sad fact is, we make no pretensions to keeping the 6th commandment. Somehow we think that standing up for the 4th commandment like no other denomination does will make up for the killing of little, innocent children inside their mother’s wombs.
———————-
Many of our church members don’t have any idea that this is going on. We trust our leaders to be guiding the ship in a safe manner, unaware that for the sake of money, we have sold our soul.
——————–
This sad state of affairs started in earnest under the leadership of Neal Wilson in the 1970s, and every succeeding president of the church has condoned it. This is what he said while president of NAD in 1970: “Though we walk the fence, Adventists lean toward abortion rather than against it. Because we realize we are confronted by big problems of hunger and overpopulation, we do not oppose family planning and appropriate endeavors to control population.”
Ministry Magazine August 1991 Abortion: history of Adventist Guidelines

If that is not a Laodicean position, i don’t know what is.
————————

It has gotten so bad that those outside our church are questioning how we can claim to have the moral upper ground while we are actively breaking the 6th commandment:
Washington Post article Jan. 24, 2011
————————-
According to this Ministry Magazine article in August 1991, the first article regarding abortion in Adventist literature was in 1867 titled “Fashionable Murder”. Then in 1869 with a title of “A Few Words Concerning a Great Sin” an article encouraged readers to read Psalm 139:16, and then stated: “They will see that even the unborn child is written in God’s book. And they may be well assured that God will not pass unnoticed the murder of such children”. In 1870 James White edited “A Solemn Appeal” to include a statement from a Dr. Miller castigating abortion as “nefarious business”, “worse than devilish practice”.
———————–
As to numbers, participants in the “Pastors’ Protest Against Abortion” supplied the figure of 1,494 abortions performed at Washington Adventist Hospital from 1975 through July 1982.

In 7 years, 1,494 murdered infants at just one of our hospitals. Where is the outrage, where is the cry for it to stop?
——————–wilson’s letter
——————–
I wrote President Ted Wilson in 2011 asking him to repent corporately for this grevious sin. he sent a nice reply, but just gave the church’s official guidelines. He ended with a comment to pray for revival and reformation, but these cannot occur until we first repent.

The guidelines say in part: “Abortions for reasons of birth-control, gender selection, or convenience are not condoned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

There are, however exceptional circumstances when a woman may face serious moral or medical dilemmas such as threats to the pregnant mother’s life, severe congenital defects carefully diagnosed in the fetus, and pregnancy resulting from rape or incest.

———————–
So i made a little parody, showing the utter failure of the guidelines to adhere to the Bible: “Sabbath breaking for reasons of work, income, or convenience are not condoned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

“There are, however, exceptional circumstances when a person may face serious moral or medical dilemmas such as threats to the person’s life, severe beatings carefully diagnosed as necessary for “retraining”, and threats from family members or mobs resulting in possible rape or incest.

A longer parody, called “SDA Guidelines on Stealing” is available on the internet.

—————————-

In 2010 i went to the General Conference Session in Atlanta, GA. There was a drive going on to “End it Now”. Great, i thot, finally a concerted effort to end abortion among Seventh-day Adventists. But then i read the fine print: “Adventists say NO to violence against women”. Why is it only big women? Why not little women, those still inside their mommy’s bellies?
———————–
Some of my fellow Seventh-day Adventists say: “Ellen White never said anything about abortion, so it must be OK.” Is this statement true?
From the
Advent Review and Sabbath Herald Volume 6

Disease and Its Causes

If the father would become acquainted with physical law, he would
better understand his obligations and his responsibilities. He would see that he had been guilty of almost murdering his children, by suffering so many burdens to come upon the mother, compelling her to labor beyond her strength before their birth, in order to obtain money to leave for them.
———————-
So we see that Ellen White talked about the father “almost murdering” his children “before their birth”, by forcing the mother to work too hard.
————————
How can a church known for human rights, standing tall to help the slaves, standing tall to make alcohol illegal, suddenly be as silent as a mouse when coming to a subject much more important? – the human right to be safe inside your mother?

I mean, the slaves AT LEAST had a chance to breathe. Even that is not allowed the littlest, most helpless ones of society.

Recently there was a heart-warming story of a girl born at 24 weeks, who was determined well enough to leave the hospital after a few months.

Madeline Mann was born at 26 weeks, just 9.9 ounces. She is now 23 years old. Her mother described her daughter in 2004 as “extraordinary, positive, and the light of my life and many lives”.

There are a few fellow SDAs sighing and crying for this terrible sin. One man was kicked out of church for doing so. Nic Samojluk is probably the most scholarly SDA with a lot of material on this subject, and the Roesch family has some good articles on this too.

Does God’s word have any advice on this issue? – Plenty:
Luke 1:15, in talking about John the Baptist says: “For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.
—————————
So we see that the Holy Spirit was in him from while he was still inside his mother’s womb. Aborting him would entail aborting the Holy Spirit, wouldn’t it?

Another very important point here, is that John the Baptist is called by name, even before coming out, showing clearly that what we call a “fetus” today (subhuman) is simply known as a “person” to God.
————————-
Then in talking about the greatest conception and birth of all this world’s history – that of Jesus Christ, Luke 1:35 says: “And answering, the angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you, and so the Holy One being born will be called God’s Son.
————————–
In this instance, Mary was carrying the seed of the Holy Spirit in her womb for 9 months. No doubt she faced a “serious moral dilemma”, as witnessed by Joseph’s actions. Now according to our Seventh-day Adventist church’s guidelines, Mary is fully within her rights to murder Jesus after appropriate medical counsel aided by her religious beliefs and the guidance of the Holy Spirit! Sick!
—————————-

One of the very real concerns i have about this, is that the Roman Catholic Church is gaining the upper hand in the “morality” department over us. We, who claim to follow all the commandments in the Bible, are being seen as a one-horse church (sabbath), who are just as corrupt as the other Protestant churches in other areas.
—————————–
On February 29, 2012, an article appeared in the Telegraph, saying that a group of medical ethicists linked to Oxford University have put forth their arguments for allowing parents to kill their newborn babies, because “ending their lives is no different to abortion”. They even call it euphemistically “after-birth abortion”. But their logic is impeccable IF you agree that it is OK to kill a baby in the womb. Our SDA guidelines would need hardly any change at all to accomodate the “new norm”.
Telegraph Feb. 29, 2012 Killing babies no different from abortion, experts say
—————————–
So when the 7 Trumpets start blowing, and nature is in turmoil and millions/billions of people are dying, the people will be forced to think about God, and instead of choosing the SDA church for direction, they will choose the RC church because it will look to have the moral authority, as everyone knows deep down inside that killing little babies is a horrendous thing.
—————————–
Let’s heed the Scriptures in Joel 2:13
So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the LORD your God, For he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness; And he relents from doing harm.

  1. I think it is clear that SDA’s doctrine is against abortions. It is just the gov’t matters to control population.

  2. Have you read the official Church guidelines on abortion yet, Martin? Our church condones abortion in many circumstances, including “moral dilemma” circumstances.
    .
That means we would officially support the right of Mary to murder Jesus in her womb.
    .
We have become monsters, and still many of the “conservatives” among us would rather talk about ridiculous economic conspiracy theories rather than something important.

  3. Seventh Day Adventist NEVER condones ABORTION. Contraception?Yes!. Abortion? No!
.Your accusations are unfounded, you’re not an adventist. You are doing defamation to Adventist denomination. You are a Catholic who feels jealous with us.

  4. But, we believe that abortion is allowed, instead should be performed if endanger the lives of the pregnant women.

  5. I can understand your horror and disbelief Martin. The fact is tho, that we DO allow abortion in several circumstances.
    .
I see you have not read our official guidelines yet, so i will quote a bit here:
“4) The Church does not serve as conscience for individuals; however, it should provide moral guidance. Abortions for reasons of birth control, gender selection, or convenience are not condoned by the Church. Women, at times however, may face exceptional circumstances that present serious moral or medical dilemmas, such as significant threats to the pregnant woman’s life, serious jeopardy to her health, severe congenital defects carefully diagnosed in the fetus, and pregnancy resulting from rape or incest. The final decision whether to terminate the pregnancy or not should be made by the pregnant woman after appropriate consultation. She should be aided in her decision by accurate information, biblical principles, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Moreover, these decisions are best made within the context of healthy family relationships.”
    .
Please note that our OFFICIAL church policy on abortion would allow Mary to murder Jesus.

  6. I wish to express my thanks to the Roesch family and to Nic Samojluk for their wonderful initial support for this video 🙂 I am not a professional videographer, just grateful that God can use me to work in a small way to end this terrible sin, and hopefully save many lives.

  7. I stopped attending the SDA church several years ago. Though I have struggled to rectify the abortion question along with other theological perplexities, I have not been able to get beyond this huge wall of the SDA being a part of the abortion mill that has cursed this nation. It defys the Law of Love no matter how you rationalize it.
Jesus said , “My command is that you Love one another”.
If I were to argue the Ten commandments as a basis, then the SDA have already failed their own pretense violating the 6th.
I recoil in horror to realize that the church who claims to be the light to the world has become excutioners of the most innocent.
I see no love expressed in the “official” policy of the church.

I have decided , that I have no choice but to submit my letter of resignation to the church. I honestly do not know where to go from here. I have been looking for years already.

The church says they will not act as a conscience for individuals. What a total cop out. The church has no problem harping on an array of teachings, and yet embraces this horrific pratice on some convoluted rationalizing.
To me this shouts out, the church has made a mockery of itself.

  8. I empathize with you Jim, yet i believe that the Seventh-day Adventist church is still the “apple of God’s eye”. There is no other object on earth on which he puts his supreme regard.
    .
What has kept me in the church after deep soul-searching twice in my life is Ezekiel 9 and Revelation 3. If we want to get the Seal of God in our foreheads, we must not only sigh and cry for the abominations done in Jerusalem, we ourselves must be IN Jerusalem too. Also, Jesus says whoever he loves, he reproves and chastens.
    .
The Israelits of old persecuted and killed the prophets sent to them, and yet, up until the time they put Jesus Christ on the cross, they were his special, chosen people.
    .
So what to do? I don’t really know any better than to stay in the church, and raise our voices against the sins in it.

  9. Two thoughts…..please remember that biblical doctrine stays solid, even when its adherents fail to uphold it.

and…..when the truth about Catholicism comes out – their own nuns, impregnated by their clergy, who have aborted..and over the years there have been millions – how could any be drawn to that church, who appear pious on the surface, but are in error biblically. Listen to Sis. Charlotte’s Testimony.

  10. I would like to recommend the feature film “Come What May”. It deals with two issues: firstly the pro-choice vs. pro-life debate and secondly the modesty movement vs. dating culture. If you would like to see these issues highlighted through drama then I recommend this film.

  11. I got a wonderful email recently from a Sister in America regarding what they did at AY for sabbath afternoon at church. Please understand that she did not tell the AY group anything about this video, or introduce it to them in any way. (edited)
    .
The AY group at church had told me for
bulletin purposes that they were going to have part 2 of last week’s topic of what the church is doing now that it didn’t used to do. Last week they discussed women’s ordination and abortion, and since they have something like 26 topics to discuss, I figured they would be going to some new topics this afternoon. Instead they wanted to revisit some points on what we talked about last week — women’s ordination and
abortion. The main reason was that last week they came away with the feeling that some people are in denial of what is going on in our church.
    .
When they got to the abortion topic they stated they wanted to show a video and had the young kids leave the room. They showed this entire You Tube video you did on abortion! After it finished there was silence. It was obvious the video had an impact. There was some
discussion afterward, but the video had pretty much told it all. What could anyone say?!? The lady sitting next to me before seeing the video was saying to me that women should have the choice of what happens to their bodies: after the video she made a couple comments to me that led me to believe she now sees abortion for the awful thing it is.
    .
Well praise God! I only hope and pray that enough people will get sick of what our church is doing and will call on the leaders to repent and leave this nefarious, hellish practice of murdering the most helpless baby humans.

  12. What is this that as SDAs who claim to be “The Remnant” need a document over 1,300 words as a bed to prevaricate on the murder of the growing child in the mother’s womb!

When Christians speak on abortion they do so CLEARLY in 10 words and there is no confusion.

“Abortion is wrong. It is murder. Murder is a sin.”

When we do we do not condemn the woman or family who has had to struggle both with the decision and afterwards. While abortion is a sin, the Holy Sprit will restore the repentant sinner, when He is at work there is nothing God cannot forgive.

It is folly to seek for your answers in your prophet. Because it is irrelevant if she was or was not silent when Scripture has spoken. The Christian’s hand or finances should have no part in this work of murdering the growing child in the womb yet the SDA institution is content to let it occur within her walls and by her hands. Truly it is by her fruits we know her.

  13. wiredog, While most of your post is spot-on, the part about putting down God’s prophet is doing despite to the Holy Spirit who spoke thru her.

May our church repent for its hideous sin of supporting the murder of the most helpless members of society, and may we all respect and follow the mouth-pieces God has chosen to speak thru.

  14. Today i received a email containing the most recent response from Ted Wilson to abortion:
    “Dear Brother Rotthoff,
Thank you for your recent letter to Elder Wilson advocating the Seventh-day Adventist church take a stronger position against abortion by eliminating all exceptions from its guidelines on the subject and mandating all hospitals within the SDA health system to discontinue the practice of all abortions. Elder Wilson has asked that I respond to you in his behalf.
    .
The SDA church does not function as conscience to its members. God gave each individual freedom of choice. Accordingly, the church supports freedom of choice in matters not related to doctrinal beliefs.
    .
The intent of the ‘Guidelines on Abortion’ is to provide Biblical principles to help individuals faced with this difficult moral dilemma in making a decision in keeping with the value God places on human life. Any attempts to coerce women ether to remain pregnant or to terminate pregnancy should be rejected as infringements of personal freedom.
    .
In the case of SDA hospitals, the General Co0nference has been assured our hospitals do not perform on-demand abortions.
    .
The role of the church is to alleviate as much as possible the unfortunate social, economic, and psychological factors that may cause an individual to opt for an abortion and to care redemptively for those suffering the consequences of individual decisions on this issue.
    .
We thank you for sharing your views with Elder Wilson.
May God continue to bless you.
Sincerely, (Signed)Orville D. Parchment Assistant to the President”

  15. It is interesting that scrpturally the bride of Christ IS chaste and blameless, without spot or blemish. That in itself speaks volumes. The fact this organization does, not by its speach, but by its ACTIONS commits murder of the most helpless demonstrates a prostitution of truth versus the purity REQUIRED Christ’s bride. Do you really think he will marry a harlot? READ YOUR BIBLES. Stop making excuses. Does this in itself not redefine the traditional definition of Rev 18? Not to mention other whoring? NOWHERE will you find Christ’s bride “changing ” her actions to BE pure but she she IS pure.

Instead of spending tens of thousands of dollars on a “Christian education ” in the ’80s I should have been among the protesters outside Sligo on the “Sabbath ” protecting unborn children instead of “keeping the Sabbath “.
Jehovah’s position is crystal clear. Individuals still have a choice – but not for long ….
