The Radical Prayer by Derek Morris review

The Radical Prayer by Derek Morris (2008)
B

The main theme of this book is Luke 10:2 “Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.” Derek Morris, pastor of the Forest Lake Seventh-day Adventist church in Apopka, Florida, exhorts us to take the words of this verse personally, and go out and spread the gospel. Excellent. This is something that all of us should have been doing already, but sad to say, we haven’t. So if this book helps wake up some people to how they should get serious about being used by God, then all glory to God 🙂

Meeting the objectives of the title nicely, the book only falls short in the area of saying parts of the Bible are not translated correctly, and that in talking about how to work for Jesus, it just mentions in how to work: “many people… only need to hear the good news, and receive the invitation.” Nowhere does it talk about the need to call people to repentance, the very first thing that Jesus did when starting his ministry. The last part of the book gives some real-life examples of people who allowed God to use them.

Hopefully this little book will serve its intended purpose of waking up people to depend more on Jesus to do what he has promised, and will inspire them to give their all to work for saving souls for Jesus’ kingdom.

  1. This was sent to me by a SDA friend. Here is what he reported to me:

“Derek Morris, a pastor in Florida, has been spearheading the SF thrust, is popular on 3ABN, and just put out the book of the month which was recommended by Mark Finley. Of course the Title is “Radical” something or another. Several months ago I observed him on his radio show invite his listeners to purchase and read a book written by “brother Lawrence.” Of course he did not reveal that “brother Lawrence” was a 16th century Roman Catholic Franscision Monk. There was not a word in his broadcast about the three angel’s messages or the SOP. Alberto Ribera, a former high ranking Jesuit who became a Sabbath keeper before he died said that if an SDA preacher refers to the Catholic church as a “Christian church” he cannot be trusted.” This is true as while there are true Christians in the RCC it is not a Christian church any more than Islam is a Christian church.”

I myself have heard DM speak on 3abn and at first it seems very exciting and ‘new’ and that is an instant grabber for us. But then as he explained more and more about his radical prayer thing it started to sound more like the prayer of Jabez….

  2. “spiritual formation”??

“the RCC it is not a Christian church any more than Islam is a Christian church.”
    .
This is definitely over-the-top. They publicly profess to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Yes, i know that they also publicly profess to believe many things that are anti-Christian, but they have many things right. I saw survey results somewhere that up to 5,000,000 current Seventh-day Adventists were once members of the Roman Catholic Church. I wonder how many were former Muslims — 500? This shows clearly that they have many of the same foundational teachings we do, while Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Jewish etc. do not.

  3. Because of the mutually held belief in the name of Jesus, there is an affinity that we share with RC people. Millions of ordinary people who are RC are devout and sincere, and many of us Protestant SDA could learn from their devotion. However, let us not be naive regarding the organization, and especially as you move up into the higher eschalons of the organization. It is Luciferian, not Christian. Learning of living in prayer from brother Lawrence is one thing, but making the transition to trusting the RC organization is totally different and deadly error.

  4. I guess this is a joke, as the link points to an article titled “THE BLACK POPE: THE MOST POWERFUL MAN IN THE WORLD?.”
    .
Yes, the Roman Catholic Church is Christian, but fallen for many centuries. Inspired writings show very clearly that they are a Christian church.

  5. If this lazy generation can dig into a little depth of history they willbehold the intellectual sloth of today’s antagonist of the RCC. No christian organisation or denomination would have survived today without the RCC. Like all old traditional organisation it has custodian who pursue the shadows (the bureaucracy) rather than the substance (the soul of the individual catholic christian. Mind you, no christian organisation that hat attained such height is innocent of this.

    But while many are now aware of its origin, there are true Christians in every church who do not know the origin of the Sunday-sabbath, and believe that they are keeping the day which God sanctified and blest. This is true of worshipers even in the Catholic Church;

Be guarded. In bearing the message make no personal thrusts at other churches, not even the Roman Catholic Church. In the different denominations angels of God see many who can be reached only by the greatest caution.

  7. True Daniel, but these statements you just quoted do not say that it is a Christian church but that there are true Christians in that church despite the fact that it is an anti-christian church. The reason being that this church has always taught that salvation must be earned through creature merits, the merits of what is deemed to be good works,,, in that church the sinner is also encouraged to pray to Mary or to those who have been declared “saints” by the pope,,, that Mary and these “saints” have a bank of merits and for that very reason they can, being in the presence of God in Heaven, intercede for us.

The true Christian church will urge the sinner to hold in abomination all other merits save those of Jesus. That church will teach that the divine merits of Christ alone avail with God and that unless the repentant believing sinner makes it his lifebusiness to look to Christ and to accept His merits which it is his privilege to claim, he cannot be saved.

This is Christianity, the other is not.

It is in the Testimonies that we find clear counsel in regard to this essential truth:

“Present your case before God pleading the MERITS of the blood shed for you upon Calvary’s cross.” Faith & Works, 106.

Because “The MERITS of His SACRIFICE are SUFFICIENT to present to the Father in our behalf.” Steps to Christ, 36.

If we believe from the heart that the merits of Christ’s sacrifice are sufficient to plead before the Father in our behalf, we believe unto righteousness.

That is faith, even great faith, and we are greatly blessed, appropriating to ourselves the blessings of pardon and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, in other words, the gift that brings all other blessings in its train.

As we daily come to God just as we are, sinful, helpless, dependent, trusting wholly in the merits of Christ, the Father receives us to Himself and clothes us with robe of Christ’s righteousness which is made manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God. Mrs. White stated that this was the third angel’s message in clear, distinct lines.

This is Christianity, the true religion, the only relgion of the Bible. The other is not.

“They need the heavenly eyesalve that they might discern with astonishment the utter worthlessness of creature merit to earn the wages of eternal life.” E.G. White, Faith & Works, 23.

But “When we seek to gain Heaven through the merits of Christ, the soul makes progress, from strength to strength, from victory to victory.” Faith & Works, 94.

  8. I understand very well that the Roman Catholic Church is not in true Christianity. Neither are the Protestant churches anymore since 1844. They are both Babylon. RCC is the mother, and her children are the Sunday-keeping denominations. NOTE: They are both Christian, which is why the last warning of mercy to the whole world is specifically to the people “in the churches”. It is many times easier for them to understand the truths that God has given the SDA church, than it is for a Muslim to believe Jesus is the Son of God, or for a Hindu or Buddhist or atheist to believe that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh and the ONLY way to salvation.
    .
The RCC officially believes in the virgin birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, that he is God incarnate, and that salvation is only thru him. To try and define them as some other religion than “Christian” defies the inspired words, all common sense, and nearly 2,000 years of history.

  9. Daniel, did you really take the time to read my last post or u just quickly skimmed over it?

You said, “I understand very well that the Roman Catholic Church is not in true Christianity. Neither are the Protestant churches anymore since 1844. THEY ARE BOTH BABYLON. RCC is the mother, and her children are the Sunday-keeping denominations.” And, in the same breath you declare: “They are both Christian.”

So then they are Babylonian-Christian churches? You also stated that the catholic church teaches that salvation is only through Jesus. Explain then why they teach that one can earn his salvation through creature merits other than the merits of Jesus only? and explain why they do teach that the sinner can pray to Mary or to the “saints” because they have a bank of merits when the Bible teaches that there is only one Mediator between God and man?

How can all these churches be both Babylon and Christian at the same time? I agree that there are sincere Christians in their midst who walk according to whatever light they have but these churches are Babylon not Christian, no matter what they profess to be. Just because a church professes to be a christian church does not make it christian any more than the devil is a christian for believing the same things that these churches profess to believe.

  10. “How can all these churches be both Babylon and Christian at the same time?”
    .
Please read more inspired words to understand. I highly recommend the 1858 edition of The Great Controversy Between Christ and His Angels, and Satan and His Angels. This book really helped me understand many things i had been taught in the church were false, and it also taught me many new things to help me better understand God and his dealings with us humans.

  11. Daniel, I doubt the 1858 edition of The Great Controversy teaches that Babylonian churches are Christian churches any more than the Bible does.

True, Babylon professes to be Christian but it is not. How can a system opposed to the teachings of Christ be called Christian? Why would the Lord call honest people out of these churches if, according to you, they are Christian churches?

What the book The Great Controversy teaches is that there are sincere searchers for truth in these babylonian churches, that’s all.
